Canadian Study Permit

  1. Application Process: International students who plan to study in Canada for more than six months generally need to obtain a study permit. The application process typically involves submitting various documents, such as proof of acceptance from a DLI, proof of financial support, a valid passport, and sometimes medical examination results.

  2. Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs): To be eligible for a study permit, students must have an acceptance letter from a DLI in Canada. DLIs include universities, colleges, and other educational institutions that are approved by provincial or territorial governments to host international students.

  3. Biometrics: As part of the application process, applicants may need to provide biometric information (fingerprints and photograph) at a Visa Application Center (VAC).

  4. Study Permit Conditions: Study permit holders must adhere to certain conditions, such as maintaining full-time student status, making satisfactory progress in their studies, and not working off-campus without proper authorization.

  5. Work Opportunities: International students with a valid study permit may be eligible to work on or off-campus during their studies, as well as participate in co-op programs, internships, or work placements related to their field of study.

  6. Renewal and Extension: Study permits are typically issued for the duration of the program of study, plus an additional 90 days. If a student’s program of study is longer than the validity period of the initial study permit, they may need to apply for an extension.

  7. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): Upon completion of their studies, international students may be eligible to apply for a PGWP, which allows them to work in Canada for up to three years. The length of the PGWP depends on the length of the program of study completed in Canada.

  8. Compliance and Reporting: Study permit holders are required to comply with Canadian immigration regulations and may need to report changes in their circumstances, such as changes in address, marital status, or program of study, to the authorities.

It’s important for international students to familiarize themselves with the specific requirements and regulations related to study permits in Canada and to ensure they maintain compliance throughout their stay in the country.
